We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Rhetoric that condemns whole cultures is reckless. It creates divisions and enemies. Martin Luther King argued that we can build peace and security only when we work to understand the beliefs and dreams of those we perceive as different from us.

This Martin Luther King Day, explore the art and history of Islam.

Construct a Dhow, a triangular sailed scow that explored and traded from the Red Sea to the South China Sea centuries before European navigators arrived.

Build a Whirling Dervish a dancer who finds peace in meditative spinning from the Sufi tradition.

Finally, join students who are new to New Haven, (sponsored by IRIS – Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Service) and students from Dwight Hall at Yale, to work on a mosaic in interlaced geometric patterns built round a calligraphic interpretation of the word Haven. This distinctive tiling appeared in Islamic art and architecture seven centuries ago.

This is not a workshop of doctrines. It is an opportunity to create art in new forms and to make new connections.
