A century and a half before Columbus traveled west, Ibn Battuta travelled east from Morocco through all of the Arab world to Persia, India, Sumatra, and China. follow a map simply and beautifully rendered by James Rumford in his book Traveling Man ©2001 Houghton Mifflin. Bring your map to life with the hippo Battuta saw in Egypt, a leopard in Zanzibar, a camel he rode from Jerusalen, horses and elephants he rode in India. Shape and decorate small wooden animals all in the styles of the new cultures Ibn Battuta encountered. Retrace his route on Google World. Follow the life of an explorer who traveled as a student, not a conqueror.

A project of 9/11 at ten: Explorations between East and West.
