Uganda, in east Africa, is a nation with the potential to develop modern sources of electrical power. It has mighty rivers and some hydropower dams. In the past 30 years, oil fields have been discovered. But conflicts have distracted from the promise of full electrification. Much of the country still relies on wood and charcoal for cooking. In the countryside, less than 10% of the population enjoys full electrification. Smokey kerosine lamps are still a necessity.

Simple Solar Batteries can leapfrog the wait for electricity. They can store power daily for communications and light. The class will contribute two lights for Ugandan children.

Experiment with a solar charger and LEDs (light emitting diode). Construct a nightlight for your room or back yard. Experiment with technology with the potential to change lives simply.

Sarah Baird is a Board Member of the Museum and a student of sustainable development in Africa.
