Lighthouses are essential communication towers that predate GPS, radar, and radio. Their beacons guide ships to port through reefs, shoals, fog and storms. They use the best engineering of their era: rugged construction in the most hostile locations, ever more efficient lights, and lenses to tune their signals. (The English Scientist David Brewster - see Monday - helped.)

Construct a lighthouse durable enough to weather your backyard...with waterproof bricks and glue. Add its keeper and family. Install a solar powered LED lamp. Shape your light with reflectors, a lens and rotation. With stories of famous lighthouse from around the world.
