A century and a half before Columbus traveled west, Ibn Battuta travelled east from Morocco through all the of the Arab world to Persia, India, Sumatra, and China. Construct a tiny Dhow, a fast and versatile triangular-sailed ship. Follow a map simply and beautifully rendered by James Rumford in his book Traveling Man*. fill your ship with the hippo that Battuta saw in Egypt, a leopard in Zanzibar, a camel he rode from Jerusalem, an elephant he rode in India. Decorate these small wooden animals in the styles of the new cultures Ibn Battuta encountered. Retrace his route on Google World. follow the life of an explorer who traveled as a student, not a conqueror.
