Each year the museum celebrates the legacy of New Haven toy maker A.C. Gilbert by inviting the public to come and play on our custom American Flyer train set. The holiday train show has become a wonderful tradition for the area and helps to highlight this New Haven icon. Gilbert’s legacy should not be associated with trains alone. Long before American Flyer, Gilbert changed the way people thought of toys with his Erector steel girder construction sets. Instead of something for passive entertainment, Erector engaged and inspired its audience to build and create as far as one could imagine. It is this legacy that we feel most connected to at the museum. Join us in creating and building using a variety of wooden gussets -of our own design- to create buildings, bridges, animals… anything you can imagine.
