2023 Summer Program

In 1933, John Andrew Rice, Theodore Dreier, and several others established a haven for creativity and ingenuity outside of Asheville, NC. The Black Mountain College attracted artists, sculptors, musicians, dancers, thinkers, and poets from all over the globe.

This week we will set the tone for our Summer 2023 camp season. No better way to do this than through the eyes of trailblazing artists like Anni and John Albers. Create outdoor artworks that will animate our campus, bringing joy to audiences all summer. Craft intricate woven wonders in the style of Ruth Asawa and hang them in surprising spots. Build outdoor geodesic domes in the style of Buckminister Fuller. Be inspired by the works of Willem de Kooning, Mary Parks Washington, and the abstract, astronomy-influenced art of Dorothea Rockburne

Assemble your own book of poems and choreograph a dance or theatrical display. Sculpt and design ceramics in the footsteps of Peter Voulkos, Karen Karnes, and Shōji Hamada. Involve the sun as your media with sun prints a la Robert Rauschenberg.

Leave camp feeling a sense of exhilaration and wonder that only the motivating art forms from the Black Mountain artists can evoke.
