Not every culture begins its year on January 1st. Those that do have distinct customs for closing the old year and greeting the coming year. Construct a five sided base for a small globe bank. Learn about the many different customs around the world. Then demonstrate 5 customs on the faces of the base. Perhaps make clothespin figures that dance in wild costumes (South Africa), or swim in icy water (the Netherlands,) or don red underwear (Venezuela,) or ring bells (Japan,) or greet the sun (Korea,) or wear polka dots (Philippines,) or break piñatas (Mexico) or light fireworks (United States.)
