2013 Summer Program

Eight hundred twenty years ago, in Jerusalem, at the end of the 3rd Crusade, the rival leaders, Richard the Lionheart and Saladin, Sultan of Syria, Mesopotamia and Egypt realized that neither of their armies had prevailed. They were equally brilliant, righteous, wise, and equally cruel. They came close to accepting that battles could not bring peace. It is a good place to ask why their conflict has not yet been settled.

Start earlier with the heavily armed Knights who faced Saladin's agile horse archers at Hattin. Construct a section of a Crusader castle. Reenact the chess game of clashes on the battlefields of the Holy Land and the intrigues of rival princes and clerics that confused the already complicated conflict. Consider Walter Scott's account of the leaders in Ivanhoe (1819).

Guest Artist: Kiran Zaman, who will teach the armor, art, calligraphy and beliefs of the East.
